My New Heart Says

A Book by Scott Bennett

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
— Ferris Bueller, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

There is a distinct difference between living a life and truly seeing it. For much of my life, I believed I was doing both. I was moving forward, building, achieving, connecting, pushing toward goals that seemed meaningful and necessary. Like most people, I oriented myself toward destinations, milestones that would validate the effort, justify the grind, and signal that I was on the right path.

What if the most important lessons of our lives are hiding in moments we almost forgot?

My New Heart Says began with a heart transplant, but it is not a book about transplantation. It is a book about life the people who shape us, the places that change us, the risks we take, the mistakes we make, the things we learn, and the seemingly ordinary moments that become extraordinary when we finally understand what they meant.

After receiving a lifesaving heart transplant, Scott Bennett began looking at his life differently. He found himself revisiting the experiences that had shaped him: childhood discoveries, friendships, family, marriage, fatherhood, work, entrepreneurship, travel, setbacks, health, faith, fear, joy, and the countless decisions — large and small — that brought him to the person he had become.

The result is a conversation between the heart Scott was born with and the heart (Cody’s heart) that gave him a second chance.

His new heart looks back at the old heart's life and asks a simple but profound question:

What were you learning while you were busy living?

Each story becomes a heartbeat moment…a moment that may have seemed insignificant at the time but, viewed through the perspective of a new heart, reveals something lasting. A lesson about taking a chance. Choosing a relationship. Trying something new. Appreciating a place. Listening more closely. Getting back up. Paying attention. Being grateful.

And ultimately, the book arrives at a realization that is both simple and difficult:

Life is not measured only by the big moments. It is shaped by whether we are present enough to recognize the small ones.

Scott's experience gives him an extraordinary reason to reflect, but the questions he asks are universal. What moments have shaped you? Who deserves more appreciation? What did you learn. from something you once considered a failure? What relationships became part of your story without you realizing it? And how much of your life are you actually noticing while you're living it?

For a generation increasingly surrounded by noise, speed, comparison, technology, and an almost constant pressure to look ahead, My New Heart Says offers a different invitation:

Look back. Pay attention. Find the meaning. Then live differently because of it.

The book speaks to anyone who has ever wondered whether they are moving too quickly through their own life. It is for people at a crossroads, people beginning a new chapter, people who have experienced loss or change, parents watching their children grow, entrepreneurs navigating uncertainty, and anyone who has reached a moment when perspective becomes more valuable than ambition.

Most of all, it is an invitation to recognize that we don't necessarily need a new heart to see our lives differently. Sometimes we simply need to listen to the one we already have.

THE BIGGER CONVERSATION

My New Heart Says is designed to extend beyond the page. Its stories naturally create conversations about second chances, gratitude, relationships, resilience, purpose, health, aging, risk, personal growth, and the meaning we make from our experiences.

That makes Scott's story particularly relevant for book clubs, corporate audiences, leadership groups, healthcare organizations, transplant communities, universities, podcasts, and media conversations.

The central idea is simple enough to remember and broad enough to belong to everyone:

Every life is full of heartbeat moments. The question is whether we recognize them while we're living them.

My New Heart Says is Scott Bennett's attempt to recognize his and, in doing so, invite readers to recognize theirs.
